The Lean Problem Solving Model
To understand the lean problem solving model, a good place to start is to look at how knowledge is created, kept and spread at Toyota. The foundational element is question based reasoning.
They say:
- The basic unit of knowledge is a question answered
The basic unit of learning is a question
That is also the basis of PHRED since its formation in 1991. We build question based reasoning systems.
Toyota Production System (TPS) is a knowledge sharing system. Our mentors at Toyota called it the Thinking Production System.
Gaining knowledge, keeping it and sharing it is embedded in the very systems Toyota use to build cars. PHRED systems are based on the same principals; they are embedded into the day to day standard work processes of a company.
The system is based on:
- Standardized work processes provide common frames of reference
- Standardized question / reasoning processes provide basic units of knowledge transfer
- Subject matter experts/ coordinators provide coaching, expertise and guide reflection
